Punjabi cuisine is one of India's richest — full of dairy, legumes, wholesome grains, and grilled meats. For GLP-1 users on medications like Ozempic (semaglutide), Mounjaro (tirzepatide), or Victoza (liraglutide), the challenge is fitting this hearty cuisine into a reduced-appetite, protein-forward eating pattern.
The good news: Punjabi food is naturally protein-rich. Dal makhani, paneer dishes, tandoori meats, and chole are among the highest-protein options in any regional Indian cuisine. With a few smart modifications, you can eat authentically Punjabi while maximising the benefits of your GLP-1 medication.
Consult your healthcare provider before starting any medication or making major dietary changes.
GLP-1 receptor agonists slow gastric emptying and significantly reduce appetite. This means you eat less — but if that smaller intake isn't protein-rich, you risk losing muscle mass alongside fat. Studies show that without adequate protein, up to 30–40% of weight lost on GLP-1 medications can come from lean muscle.
For Punjabis, who often carry a genetic predisposition to insulin resistance and abdominal obesity, preserving muscle is especially important. Muscle tissue improves insulin sensitivity — the very problem GLP-1 medications are helping address.
Target: 1.2–1.6 g of protein per kg of body weight per day.

Protein per bowl: ~12g
Traditional dal makhani uses generous cream and butter. For GLP-1 users, reduce the fat load while keeping the protein:
The result is a protein-dense, gut-friendly meal that's easier to digest — important since GLP-1 medications already slow gastric emptying.
Protein per serving (2 pieces): ~28g
Marinate chicken thighs or breast in:
Cook in an air fryer (200°C, 15 min) or on a grill pan. Serve with mint chutney and sliced onion. Avoid naan alongside — pair with a small salad instead to keep carbs low.
Protein per plate: ~20g (with 80g paneer)
This classic winter dish becomes a protein powerhouse with the paneer addition.

Served cold as a salad-style bowl — ideal for days when your appetite is very low on GLP-1 medications.

A Punjabi breakfast staple. For GLP-1 users:
High-protein, quick to prepare, and easy on the stomach.

Adjust portions to your comfort — GLP-1 medications reduce appetite significantly. Even a half-portion is fine if you're full. The priority is reaching your protein target, even in smaller meals.
Reduce ghee and cream gradually. Traditional Punjabi cooking uses generous fat. On GLP-1, your stomach empties slowly — too much fat can cause prolonged nausea. Aim for ½–1 tsp ghee maximum per meal.
Plan lighter meals around your injection day. If you inject weekly (Ozempic or Mounjaro), nausea typically peaks 24–48 hours after injection. On those days, choose lighter Punjabi options — curd with a little rice, thin dal soup, or plain lassi.
Be careful with makki di roti and parathas. These are high in carbohydrates. Limit to 1 small roti per meal and pair with high-protein sides (dal, paneer, eggs, or chicken) to blunt blood sugar spikes.
Lassi is your friend. Plain unsweetened lassi provides probiotics, protein, and hydration. It also soothes GLP-1-related nausea. Avoid sweet lassi, mango lassi, or salted chaas with added sugar.
Prioritise dal over roti. On GLP-1, you may only manage small quantities. If you have to choose, eat more dal and less roti — the dal delivers more protein per calorie.
Drink water between meals, not with them. Drinking large amounts of water during meals on GLP-1 can worsen fullness and nausea. Sip water throughout the day instead.
