GLP-1 and Fasting: A Guide for Navratri, Ramadan & Ekadashi
Many Indians observe regular fasts for religious and cultural reasons. If you are on GLP-1 medication, here is how to manage fasting safely.
Important Disclaimer
Fasting while on GLP-1 medication should only be done under medical supervision. Always consult your doctor before fasting.
General Guidelines
Before the Fast
- Consult your endocrinologist about adjusting medication timing
- Stock up on permitted high-protein foods
- Ensure adequate hydration in the days before
During the Fast
- Stay hydrated — drink water whenever your fast permits
- Break your fast gently — start with dates, water, or light soup
- Prioritize protein when eating — this is even more critical during fasting periods
- Watch for hypoglycemia signs: dizziness, sweating, confusion
Navratri Fasting (9 days)
Many Navratri fasts allow:
- Kuttu ka atta (buckwheat) — make rotis or cheelas (13g protein per 100g)
- Sabudana (tapioca) — low protein, combine with peanuts
- Singhare ka atta (water chestnut flour)
- Makhana (fox nuts) — excellent GLP-1 friendly snack (9g protein per 100g)
- Paneer — your primary protein source during Navratri
- Curd/yogurt — good protein, aids digestion
Sample Navratri day:
| Meal | Food | Protein |
|---|
| Morning | Kuttu cheela with curd | 15g |
| Midday | Paneer with sabudana khichdi | 22g |
| Evening | Makhana + fruits | 8g |
| Night | Aloo-paneer curry + kuttu roti | 18g |
| Total | | 63g |
Ramadan Fasting (Suhoor to Iftar)
- Suhoor (pre-dawn): High-protein, slow-digesting foods — eggs, paneer paratha, dal, oats with nuts
- Iftar (sunset): Break with dates and water, then eat protein-rich foods
- Medication timing: Discuss with your doctor — some shift to evening dosing
- Hydration: Drink 2-3 liters between Iftar and Suhoor
Ekadashi Fasting
Ekadashi typically allows fruits, nuts, and milk:
- Dry fruits and nuts — almonds (21g protein per 100g), cashews, walnuts
- Milk/buttermilk — 8g protein per glass
- Sabudana khichdi with peanuts — peanuts add 26g protein per 100g
When to Break Your Fast
Stop fasting immediately if you experience:
- Severe nausea or vomiting
- Blood sugar below 70 mg/dL
- Dizziness or fainting
- Severe dehydration symptoms
